One of the stranger stories of the day comes from 13WMAZ down in Macon. Three Saturdays ago, three black fishermen – two adults and a teenager – were doing some quiet night fishing on Lake Tobesofkee.

From a large house on shore, they could see a figure on a balcony with what looked to be an assault rifle equipped with a laser sight. Five to eight shots were fired ahead of their boat’s bow. The fishermen fled.

Then they called police with their report of a lakeside sniper. The home from which the shots were fired turned out, according to the TV station, to belong to Jalal Ghali, a cardiologist and faculty member of the Mercer University School of Medicine.

Truly, this is what happened next:

"He also stated that this could wait until the morning because he was on call," the incident report states. "At this time the older male turned off all the lights to the residence and walked away from the door," the report states.

Now we have the three-week update from Bibb County Sheriff David Davis, who doesn’t seem to be doubting that shots were indeed fired:

Again, from the 13MAZ website:

"The homeowner has retained an attorney who investigators are working with to gather information," Davis said, "They have been somewhat cooperative with us in our investigation, but we still have not been able to get enough evidence or enough information to be able to say concretely who was in the house at the time that the shots were fired at the fishermen or more specifically who is responsible for firing those shots," Davis said.

There is something witty to be said about this, but it’s just not coming.
