Senate chairman offers an early doubt about House transportation bill

March 14, 2013 - Atlanta, Ga: Sen. Tommie Williams, R-Lyons, speaks in opposition of House Bill 487 during Legislative Day 34 in the Senate Chambers at the State Capitol Thursday afternoon in Atlanta, Ga., March 14, 2013. HB 487 passed by substitute 35-16. Under HB 487, more money could flow to the state's HOPE scholarship program. The bill would give control and enforcement of video poker machines to the Georgia Lottery Corp, with a share of the profits going to HOPE. The plan is supported by Gov. Nathan Deal. Feb 2, 2015Todd Rehm over at Georgia News Network has posted a minute-long interview with Tommie Williams, R-Lyons, chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee – which will hold a 4 p.m. meeting today to discuss the House transportation funding bill introduced last week.
The gathering is unusual because a House committee hasn’t held its first meeting on the bill. You can listen to Williams’ comments above. But toward the end, he sounds like he has a different approach in mind:
"The House bill is an attempt to go to only an excise tax. What I want our members to understand is what that means. How we will collect it, and how that will affect the locals, and how we can make that work – if we can make it work at all."
