Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, long one of Donald Trump's loyalists, has joined the droves of Republican elders berating the party's nominee for his role in the civil war engulfing the GOP.

The ex-Georgia lawmaker told Fox Business Network on Thursday that Trump's reaction to House Speaker Paul Ryan and other Republicans who have fled his campaign after a video showed him bragging about sexually harassing women is "frankly pathetic."

"Let me just say about Trump, who I admire and I've tried to help as much as I can: There's a big Trump and a little Trump," Gingrich said. "The little Trump is frankly pathetic. I mean, he's mad over not getting a phone call?"

He's referring to a Trump rally in Florida on Wednesday where the candidate berated Ryan for not calling to congratulate him after Sunday's debate.

Gingrich, who was on Trump's running-mate short list, said Trump should keep his eye on his real opponent in November  and not get drawn into sideshows.

"Her name is Hillary Clinton," he said. "Her name is not Paul Ryan. It’s not anybody else.”

His plea to Trump: "Focus on defeating Hillary."
