On the heels of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll that shows Donald Trump trailing Hillary Clinton in Georgia, we have word that the Republican ticket's No. 2 is headed to our state at the end of the month.
Trump state director Brandon Phillips said Saturday that Indiana Gov. Mike Pence will visit Atlanta on Aug. 29 for a fundraiser, and that the campaign is working on the possibility of a public event. Insider Advantage reported that Nick Ayers, a Cobb County native who is a Pence adviser, is helping to coordinate the visit.
While Trump crisscrosses battleground states - his weekend schedule includes stops in Iowa and New Hampshire - Pence is being dispatched for a different sort of mission. A recent New York Times report said that Trump's narrow path to a November victory means he must win in Pennsylvania (which no Republican has won since 1988), Ohio and Florida while keeping North Carolina in the GOP column.
Robin Hayes, the chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party, said he anticipated that Mr. Pence, an evangelical Christian, would visit the state often to speak about "North Carolina Judeo-Christian values."
Pence also has close ties to veteran GOP operatives. In addition to Ayers, who had a hand in several big Georgia races involving the Perdue family, he also is close to Kellyanne Conway, a pollster who was a close adviser to Newt Gingrich during his 2012 White House run.
