Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is heading to Washington tomorrow for a White House roundtable about the need to pass the politically-endangered Trans-Pacific Partnership.
Reed will be part of a group of TPP supporters that includes Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The group will huddle with President Barack Obama in the Oval Office to discuss what "the TPP would mean for them and how we can work together to put the agreement into action," according to a White House official.
Reed and Kasich will also participate in the White House press briefing tomorrow at 11:45 a.m., which can be streamed live on C-SPAN.
The meeting comes as Obama mounts a massive final push for Congress to approve the deal in its lame duck session. He's got a tight timeline to convince congressional leaders the 12-nation deal is worthwhile since both of the candidates to replace him have disavowed it.
As for Reed, TPP is one key area where he differs from Hillary Clinton, who was pushed to abandon the deal by the more liberal wing of the party. Reed in the past has cited the need to "be the adults in the room" when it comes to the deal and has dismissed claims that it would kill jobs.
