Jason Carter to join gaggle of Georgians with speaking role at DNC 2016
CLEVELAND - At the just-finished Republican National Convention, the only Georgian with a prominent speaking role was former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. At next week's Democratic bash in Philadelphia, the list of Georgia speakers is growing by the day.
Former state Sen. Jason Carter is set to speak at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday to introduce a video of his grandfather, former President Jimmy Carter. He joins a group of Georgians with podium time that includes House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.
Carter, Reed and Abrams form a triumvirate of young Georgia Democrats who are likely to run for higher office. Carter and Abrams are said to be considering a run for governor in 2018. And while Reed has ruled out a 2018 run, he frequently says he has "another campaign in me" - potentially the U.S. Senate in 2020 or the governor's race two years after that.
Other Georgians could soon be announced as speakers at the Philadelphia gathering as well, including Rep. John Lewis, who earned a burst of national attention for his sit-in on the floor of the U.S. House.
