A major labor union on Tuesday endorsed Democrat Stacey Abrams, pledging to marshal its 10,000 Georgia members behind the candidate's bid for governor.

Edgar Fields of the Southeast Council of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union said the group picked Abrams because of her plan to "ensure Georgians don't just survive but thrive across our state."

"Any candidate who believes equality will build prosperity is a candidate who we know will fight for working people in Georgia," said Fields.

Abrams, a former state House minority leader, faces fellow Democratic state Rep. Stacey Evans in next year's vote. The two are already divvying up support from Democratic powerbrokers as they race to retake Georgia's governor's mansion. Four Republicans, all with hefty campaign coffers, are in the race.

The union aims to be a major player in Georgia politics. It organized several canvassing drives for 6th District candidate Jon Ossoff earlier this year, and endorsed Atlanta mayoral candidate Ceasar Mitchell last week.
