State Sen. Michael Williams was the first state elected official in Georgia to endorse Donald Trump. And as he gears up for a gubernatorial run, he wants to make sure everyone knows it.
The Cumming Republican sent a tweet on Friday that poked fun of GOP rival Hunter Hill, another state senator, for his pro-Trump message.
“You wouldn’t work to elect Trump but now you use his name for votes? Leave disingenuous politics to others” he tweeted.
In a follow-up, Williams said that it's "wrong for a candidate to prey on loyal Trump supporters for their votes based on false pretenses." And he said he'd make the same case against two other Republicans in the race: Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Secretary of State Brian Kemp.
Hill, a combat veteran who announced his campaign for governor in April, dismissed the attack.
“I didn’t know we had to ask for Senator Williams’ permission to support our president," said Hill, who represents parts of Fulton and Cobb counties. "I guess Senator Williams thinks he is the only Georgian allowed to support President Trump. That seems out of touch and completely disingenuous to the millions of Georgians who voted for our president.”
