Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich on Wednesday endorsed Senate President pro tem David Shafer in the GOP contest for lieutenant governor, calling him "an effective, innovative legislator with a solidly conservative record."

Shafer has picked up support from several former lawmakers and state officials -- as well as Texas U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush.

State Sen. Rick Jeffares and state Rep. Geoff Duncan are also in the GOP hunt to replace Casey Cagle, who is running for governor. No Democrats have yet announced.
