State Sen. David Shafer is tallying up more endorsements in his bid for lieutenant governor to try to scare away any more competitors.

With word spreading that state Sen. Rick Jeffares is considering whether to also run for the No. 2 job, Shafer unveiled a new list of supporters that includes Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens and state Sen. Jeff Mullis.

Hudgens called Shafer a "man of great integrity who helped build our Republican party and advance conservative ideals." And Mullis, who chairs the chamber's Rules Committee, said Shafer was the "best prepared and best organized candidate."

"He is building unstoppable momentum," said Mullis. "It is very late for anyone else to mount a serious campaign from scratch."

Shafer, a Gwinnett Republican, has also earned the support of Republican mega-donor Bernie Marcus, a Home Depot co-founder. He faces at least one GOP rival - state Rep. Geoff Duncan got in the race weeks ago - though Jeffares has been sounding out supporters for his potential run.

Former state Sen. Doug Stoner is among the Democrats eyeing the race.
