It seems we have a kickoff date for Republican Casey Cagle's gubernatorial campaign.
A flyer is circulating about an April 30 event for Cagle and a "surprise musical guest" at the Infinite Energy Center in Duluth.
"This is an invitation from Casey to friends and supporters to join him and his family for a fun evening with some live music, some food and an opportunity to discuss conservative solutions to lead the state forward," said campaign spokesman Scott Binkley.
(He added: "It'll be a family event and I hope that the Bluesteins will be able to join.")
Though he wouldn't say it, the event sure sounds like the formal launch of his campaign for governor. Cagle has plotted for years to run for the state's highest office, and he filed paperwork last week to begin his campaign.
He's the presumptive Republican front-runner in what could be a crowded field to succeed a term-limited Nathan Deal. Secretary of State Brian Kemp is already in the race, and a cast of current and former lawmakers – along with an "outsider" or two – are considering entering the contest.
Democrats are gearing up for a chance to flip the seat for the first time since 2002. House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams is seen as a lock to join the contest and others, including state Rep. Stacey Evans and former state Sen. Jason Carter, are exploring a run.
