Gov. Nathan Deal appointed his former spokesman to the board of the Georgia World Congress Center Authority, a coveted position that oversees the sprawling convention center and the sparkling new Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The governor announced the appointment of Brian Robinson on Tuesday. A former aide to Rep. Lynn Westmoreland, Robinson joined Deal’s campaign in March 2010 and was his deputy chief of staff through his second term in office.

Under the Gold Dome, he was known for using biting wit and unbridled umbrage to defend his boss from his pirate-themed statehouse office. Since leaving Deal’s team in July 2015, he launched the Robinson Republic communications consulting firm.

A seat on the World Congress Center Authority’s board is one of the more sought-after appointments in state government because it includes access and tickets to premier sporting events and concerts held at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The board also governs the Centennial Olympic Park and the College Football Hall of Fame, and has outlined an aggressive expansion strategy. It plans to expand the convention center and develop a towering hotel on the former site of the Georgia Dome.
