Durham, N.H. - Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spent the opening hour of Thursday's debate in a biting battle over the soul of the Democratic Party.

Clinton depicted Sanders as an overly ambitious idealist who risked undoing the party's greatest gains, while Sanders cast her as an incrementalist too timid to advocate for more sweeping changes.

Which made it all the more surreal when the showdown at the University of New Hampshire ended on a lovey-dovey moment.

Clinton vowed that, if chosen the party's nominee,  "the first person I would call" would be Sanders to discuss how to move the party forward.

Then Sanders chimed in: “On our worst days, I think it’s fair to say we are 100 times better than any Republican candidate.”
