Donald Trump stirred the pot in the Republican race for the White House again on Saturday, but his latest salvo against Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) was met with widespread rebukes from other GOP hopefuls and leading Republicans across the country.
Trump - well known for his biting verbal attacks - was asked about his recent public feud with McCain, who recently called supporters of Trump's "crazies."
"He's a war hero because he was captured," Trump said dismissively, adding, "I like people that weren't captured."
The remark drew immediate condemnation from other Republicans, both in and out of the race for the White House, and highlighted questions about whether Trump's penchant for verbal jabs might get him in further hot water in this campaign.
After his remarks at a GOP event in Iowa, Trump sparred with reporters over what he had said - and then was asked about his own military service during the Vietnam War. The Washington Post wrote it up this way:
