It took a bit longer than some rather confident Democrats had been predicting, but as the polls closed in California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington State at 11pm, the networks were able to declare Barack Obama the winner of the 2008 Presidential race.

Obama also seems to have eked out a victory in Virginia, and for now is holding onto a narrow lead in Florida.  John McCain is leading at this hour in Indiana, but that won't help him much.

Overall, the popular vote total is fairly close, but the electoral college vote is going to be a different story.

While the networks called Ohio for Obama, his lead there has been steadily shrinking, and is now down to 52-47%.

But the headline right now is Barack Obama will be the 44th President of the United States.
