If you're a fan of Aperol, spritz drinks and cocktail site Punch, we've got a treat for you. Punch editor Talia Baiocchi and Saveur magazine editor Leslie Pariseau will be at Ticonderoga Club May 17 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. to promote their new book "Spritz," a complete history (with recipes) of Italy's bittery, bubbly aperitivo cocktail.
The ladies will be on hand to meet and greet guests, talk spritz history and sign copies of their book while Ticonderoga Club masterminds Paul Calvert and Greg Best dole out free Aperol spritz as well as cocktails inspired by Baiocchi and Pariseau's book.
“We have great respect for Talia, Leslie and all the folks at Punch," said Calvert on why he and Best were interested in hosting the event. "Talia's book on sherry is one of our favorites, and we felt like 'Spritz's' focus on eating, drinking and conviviality paired well with Ticonderoga’s values.”
“Spritz” is filled with historical narratives tracing the cocktail’s roots from ancient Rome to modern-day Italy to its most recent revival as a low-alcohol staple on bar menus around the world. The book also includes 50 recipes, a guide for building your an at-home spritz bar as well as recipes for classic Italian snacks to pair with each cocktail.
So, why should Atlantans care about the spritz cocktail? Calvert explained, “A spritz, with its necessary bubbles, functions much like an espresso in the late-afternoon: soul-rejuvenating, spirit-re-calibrating, shoulder-relaxing. The lower alcohol content means you can have a few en route to dinner but still tuck in early. That same low ABV means your spritz might just be the stretch before a night of marathon imbibing.”
Guests attending the book signing and cocktail meet and greet will be treated to a complimentary Aperol spritz (until 8 p.m.), signed copies of “Spritz” and a few classic spritz cocktails inspired by Baiocchi and Pariseau’s book along with appropriately paired snacks. We’re told Mr. Best has even grown a “very Venetian-looking mustache” for the occasion.
"Spritz" book signing. May 17, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., free. Guests must RSVP at rsvp@punchdrink.com. Space is limited. Ticonderoga Club, 99 Krog St. NE, Atlanta. 404-458-4534, ticonderogaclub.com.
