DISH OF THE WEEK: Artichoke beignets at Del Frisco’s Grille
Say “beignets” and I picture myself at Café Du Monde in New Orleans. I’m sitting down to a plate filled with puffy squares of deep-fried choux pastry covered in powdered sugar, sipping café au lait and watching carriage horses clip-clop along Decatur Street.
Alas! An escape to the Crescent City isn’t happening any time soon. Yet as the holiday season hits full throttle, I know I’m going to need an escape from the shopping craze – along with all that is red, green and jingle-belled. I found it, along with a different sort of beignet, at Del Frisco’s Grille.
Here, the beignets are savory, filled with artichoke chunks and melted Fontina and Parmesan cheeses. The interior of these round fritters is remarkably soft and moist, the exterior nicely crisped. Such a pleasure it is to cut them with the side of a fork, spear into a half, smother it with some of that thick, creamy sweet basil sauce and pop it into your mouth. It is one of those special dishes that will have you closing your eyes to better appreciate the flavor sensation.
Let the rest of humanity battle over doorbuster deals at Lenox Square. Take refuge on the other side of Peachtree Road at Del Frisco’s with an order of this seasonal appetizer. And forget the café au lait; a glass of wine will do just fine.
