Check out six things for foodies to do in and around Atlanta this month:
Get a new recipe for the holiday weekend, then shop for the ingredients
Throughout the year, local farmers markets team up with local chefs to give you new ideas for serving produce and locally made items from their vendors. Morningside Farmers Market celebrates Fourth of July weekend with a demo from chef Matthew Ridgway of Buckhead’s Gypsy Kitchen and The Southern Gentleman. Ridgway will walk the market selecting produce from the organic farmers and then prepare a dish for the crowd to sample. Later in the month, Adrian Villarreal of Rreal Tacos will do the demo on July 16.
9 a.m. Saturdays. Free. 1393 N. Highland Avenue, Atlanta. No registration required.

Drink a toast to French independence
Wine tastings at Perrine’s Wine Shop on the Westside sell out quickly, but if you move fast, you just might be able to get a space when James Nichols, the shop’s manager and Certified Sommelier, offers a tasting of eight or more French wines including sparkling, white, red and rose. It’s a special celebration of the wines of the homeland of shop owner Perrine Prieur, a native of Burgundy. Raise a glass to the valiant French and then enjoy a selection of artisanal cheeses, charcuterie and crackers. While you sip and nibble you’ll talk about the region and history of each wine and learn about the traditions of French winemaking. If you purchase six of the wines served in the tasting, you’ll get the class fee back.
5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 14. $25. Perrine's Wine Shop, 1168 Howell Mill Road, Atlanta. Register here or by emailing perrine@perrineswine.com.
Jarry is a twice yearly magazine that explores food and gay culture. Magazine staff will be at Cover Books for an evening event to celebrate Steven Satterfield's Atlanta, a culinary tour of Atlanta from Jarry's most recent issue. Enjoy refreshing summery drinks and selected bites from Miller Union. Copies of Jarry and Steven Satterfield's cookbook "Root to Leaf" will be for sale and available for signing.
6 – 8 p.m. Thursday, July 14. Cover Books, 1031 Marietta Street, Atlanta. Free but please RSVP.

Bite into the taste of summer with a delicious tomato sandwich
On July 23, Freedom Farmers Market at the Carter Center is hoisting the tomato flag proudly. Tomato Day will feature chef Jenn Robbins serving tomato sandwiches to die for, a tomato tasting tent so you can find the tomato that pleases every one of your 10,000 taste buds and a tomato canning demo so you can preserve summer’s favorite vegetable. A tip from last year’s event – get there early before all the tomatoes are gone!

Eat your way through downtown Atlanta
Is it any wonder restaurant weeks have become wildly popular? They're great for the restaurants because they can bring a new group of customers in the door and they're great for those customers who enjoy trying out a new (for them) restaurant in a new part of town. On July 23, Atlanta Downtown Restaurant Week kicks off its fourteenth year with more than 35 participating restaurants offering special menus each day through July 31. Brunch, lunch and dinner menus are available at $15 to $35 per person. Check out the participating restaurants.
