The shopping districts of North Highland Avenue from Morningside to Virginia-Highland have been around since the neighborhoods’ beginnings in the 1920s. Buildings that once put a grocery or hardware store within walking distance of every household now are home to everything from high-end eyewear to home accessories. And there’s plenty of food-related shopping to do along the way. Here are three of our latest finds for food lovers.
Seasonal vegan, organic chocolates
One of Virginia-Highland's newer shops is Tipple & Rose, offering breakfast treats, sandwiches and salads, decadent desserts and dozens of teas. A staple of the sweets selection is an assortment of truffles from Nicobella Organics. Dark chocolate surrounds luscious seasonally-flavored vegan fillings that replace cream and butter with dairy-free organic ingredients. For fall, the shop will be carrying Cinnamon Turmeric Spice, Pure Cocoa Bliss, Green Ginger Tea and Sunflower Banana truffles. $2.25 per truffle. Whipped honey
Neighborhood favorite Alon's Bakery & Market is packed with everything from soup to nuts. You could spend an hour browsing. Make it easy on yourself by picking up a loaf of their fresh baked raisin-walnut loaf and a jar of Savannah Bee Company's Original Whipped Honey. If you love honey but don't want it dripping off your toast, whipped honey is the solution. Potholders made from recycled saris
As a kid, did you spend hours with your weaving loom making potholders from colorful fabric loops? Artisans from Bangladesh use recycled saris to create a contemporary version of this childhood favorite. They're pretty irresistible. You'll find them when you turn the corner from North Highland to Saint Charles Avenue and visit Ten Thousand Villages. The shop's been in the neighborhood for more than 20 years selling fair trade gifts, jewelry and items for your kitchen. $16 for three.
