Time to start shopping for holiday gifts?

Maybe you’re looking for the perfect thing for that foodie in your life who loves local food but already has everything.

Everything that is except ……. their own fruit tree. What could be more local than fruit off a tree in your own front yard?

Urban Explorers of Atlanta has the solution. On Friday, Nov. 27, they've organized a Green Friday Fruit Tree Tour led by Robby Astrove.

Along the way, Astrove will talk about planting and caring for fruit trees and point out trees that are thriving in urban settings.

It’s not just about apples and figs. Did you know there’s a thriving jujube tree on Flat Shoals Avenue across from The Midway Pub?

Astrove earned the title "Johnny Appleseed of Atlanta" by planting more than 15 orchards at local schools, parks and farms. The tour will include his personal "food forest," which includes serviceberry, pawpaw, American persimmon, dwarf figs, pomegranates, pears, cherries, kiwi vines, blueberries and raspberries.

Astrove will start off at the East Atlanta Branch Library, 400 Flat Shoals Avenue SE, Atlanta 30316 at 10 a.m. Tour goers will walk about a mile through East Atlanta and end up back in East Atlanta Village just in time for lunch.

The fee is $5 which goes to Fruit Forward, Astrove’s non-profit that plants fruit trees and orchards around Atlanta.
