Over the past few years, the founders of Atlanta’s Monday Night Brewing have made some bold moves that have given their brand a much bigger profile.

In late 2017, they not only opened a tasting room and event space at the Lee + White development in West End, dubbed the Garage, they switched from bottles to cans, and debuted a new design.

A bit more subtle, maybe, but equally important, brewmaster Peter Kiley has been reevaluating and tweaking some of the brewery’s flagship beers.

Among them, the “newer, juicer” version of Blind Pirate Blood Orange IPA hit the market in mid-May. And now it’s this week’s Beer Pick.

Profile

Straight up, Monday Night bills Blind Pirate as “a juicy IPA,” noting that, “we add bits of real blood orange to every beer, so you know it’s good.” But recently, brewmaster Peter Kiley decided it could be made even better by adjusting the hop additions and fine-tuning the mash process.

Brewed with two-row, wheat, Munich and caramel malts, and a combo of Citra, Comet, Simcoe, and Columbus hops, not surprisingly, the 7.4% ABV double IPA pops with a panoply of citrus notes. But there’s also a nice balance in play with the malt, and some sweetness that follows into the finish.

Match Blind Pirate with bright Asian dishes such spring rolls, Thai salads, noodle dishes, Orange Chicken, or roasted duck with orange sauce.
