There’s no doubt, I’ve been on a Brut IPA kick over the past year or so. It’s a relatively new style that I can get behind because it embodies many of my favorite things about beer. It’s bubbly, refreshing, and food friendly, and in most cases, it’s very dry.

All that was reinforced during a Brewery Ommegang beer dinner at the Georgia Chapter Room in Sandy Springs, which included a delicious bottle-conditioned Brut IPA.

Justin Forsythe, Innovation Manager at Brewery Ommegang, was on hand for the dinner, and pointed out that besides drinking like a dry sparkling wine, Ommegang Brut IPA only has 140 calories.

And in honor of that, Ommegang Brut IPA is this week’s Beer Pick.

Ommegang Brut IPA

Brewery Ommegang, Cooperstown, NY

Available in 4-pack 12-ounce bottles

Profile

Ommegang Brut IPA is one of the more elegant examples of the emerging style. Dry-hopped with Mandarina Bavaria, Citra and Calypso, and bottle conditioned in Ommegang’s cellars, it displays the Belgian roots and Old World methods of the brewery.

Touted as “a different breed of bubbly,” it features a champagne-like sparkle and clarity, and a balanced palette, with notes of grapefruit and pine, and a perfectly dry finish. At 6.2% percent alcohol, and only 140 calories, it’s light, bright and super food friendly.

Pair with

At the Ommegang beer dinner at the Georgia Chapter Room Brut, IPA was paired with a local meat and cheese platter, which proved to be a great way to start the evening. Like other Brut IPAs, it would pair well with raw or grilled oysters, shrimp cocktail, or brunch dishes, too.
