Now is the season for pumpkin beer — not one of my favorite styles, because most aren’t very well balanced, often relying on pumpkin pie spice as the main attraction.
But there are few examples that defy the stereotype, standing out as solid, enjoyable fall sippers.
And in honor of the beginning of October, Dogfish Head Punkin Ale is this week’s Beer Pick.
Beer Pick
Punkin Ale
Dogfish Head Craft Brewery Inc., Delaware
Available August-November on draft and in 12-ounce bottles
Profile
A longtime Dogfish Head seasonal stalwart, originally released way back in 1995, Punkin Ale is billed as a brown ale brewed with pumpkin and spices.
At 7 percent alcohol, with a pale brown color, it’s a malty, sweet and spicy, with a surprisingly full body, and not so surprising spicy aromas and flavors of brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice.
Pair with
Dogfish Head recommends pairing Punkin Ale with sharp cheddar, turkey, roasted duck, lamb, stuffing, and desserts.
