The scammers claim to be from the IRS. They say you owe a debt and threaten to arrest you if you don’t pay up immediately, or, if you’re a new immigrant, they threaten to deport you.

The Brookhaven Police Department, which serves a community with many new immigrants, is warning of the con.

“Please stay vigilant and never do unsolicited business over the phone,” the agency posted on Facebook, along with a list of tips.

Remember:

  • The IRS doesn't want payment with a pre-paid card.
  • It also won't text or email you or contact you on social media.
  • Agents don't threaten arrest, deportation or license suspension.
  • Nor do they ask for PINs or password.
