The most popular cable television program in history is getting the amusement park treatment.
"The Walking Dead" Attraction opens July 4 at Universal Studios Hollywood in California. The creative team behind AMC's post-apocalyptic TV show, which is filmed throughout Georgia, provided input on the interactive walk-through experience.
"We're creating animatronic walkers that guests will be able to see," said Greg Nicotero, the show's executive producer and director, in a statement. "It's one-of-a-kind, state-of-the-art ... and I can't wait."
Nicotero and Los Angeles-based special effects studio KNB EFX Group Inc. collaborated with Universal Studios to create realistic-looking zombies that, in some cases, mirror the monsters seen on TV.
"We're getting the chance to utilize molds that were created specifically for the show and translate them into parts of the attraction," Nicotero said.
The year-round experience is an upgraded extension of Universal Studio's seasonal "Halloween Horror Nights Maze" and follows an emerging trend of interactive amusement options. This will be the second major attraction to open at Universal Studios Hollywood this year following the debut of " The Wizarding World of Harry Potter" in April. Universal Studios Hollywood general admission prices start at $95 to $115 per person.
"The Walking Dead" concluded its sixth season in April with a controversial cliffhanger. The program is viewed by more adults — between ages 18 to 49 — than any other TV show, according to Universal Studios.
