The Wreck of the Richard & Charlene is named after a large trawler that ended up aground after Hurricane Hugo hit in 1989. The restaurant sits on Shem Creek, a hub of the local seafood industry. You might have a hard time finding it, and it's only open three hours a night, but the fresh-off-the-boat seafood and authentic wharf ambiance make it a must when in the Charleston area. Southside Smokehouse is a Carolina-style barbecue joint that also serves a chef-driven menu of classic Cajun and creole dishes inspired by the owner-chef's time in Louisiana. Aiken
Track Kitchen, an off-the-beaten-path eatery on a dirt road next to a thoroughbred training track, serves diner-style breakfasts. The atmosphere is the real draw here. This un-air-conditioned, whitewashed cinder-block building is where the elite of the equestrian world eat. The local conversation is as good as the food. Under $10. The Stables Restaurant at Rose Hill Estate is located in a historic winter colony estate in downtown Aiken. The old stable facilities have been converted into a restaurant serving casual American, Italian and German fare. It has a great patio, too. Be sure to walk the bucolic grounds after your meal.
