Morris Museum of Art
Venture to downtown Augusta’s Riverwalk for some artistic appreciation of the Southern kind. The Morris Museum of Art features artists from the South, with nearly 5,000 items in its collection, from paintings to photographs to sculptures and more. Included are paintings inspired by the Civil War, pieces from self-taught artists such as Howard Finster, antebellum portraits and Southern impressionism. Special exhibits rotate throughout the year. “American Ballads: The Photographs of Marty Stuart” spotlights visuals snapped by the country music artist and runs through Nov. 27. Other special events include film screenings, live concerts, demonstrations and more.

Babyland General Hospital
The home of the Cabbage Patch Kids phenomenon — artist Xavier Roberts originally called his dolls Little People Originals in the late 1970s — still resides in the North Georgia town of Cleveland. In 2009, the doors to a new, larger attraction and museum opened. It’s still free to visit. The hub of activity takes place around the Magic Crystal Tree, where visitors witness the “birth” of hand-sculpted, adoptable Little People Newborn. Sure, you can add one to your family — just keep in mind they start at $225. Exclusive vinyl-faced dolls and other lower-priced goodies can be found in the gift shop. Special ticketed events take place, including a tea party Oct. 8.

Tricentennial Park
A trio of museums share real estate in downtown Savannah. The Savannah History Museum & Battlefield Memorial Park serves as a history lesson on the city that spans from 1733 to contemporary times. Take a look at the park bench used in “Forrest Gump,” and walk across the street to Battlefield Memorial Park, the site of the American Revolution Battle of Savannah. The Georgia State Railroad Museum includes rides on a historic steam or diesel locomotive, and the Savannah Children’s Museum offers outdoor interaction for the younger set.
