Lowndes won the Winnersville Classic, Appling County beat No. 1 Toombs County, Jefferson ended North Oconee’s 33-game region winning streak, and 23 teams clinched region titles - five for the first time in 10 or more years - in football games Friday night.
Lowndes, ranked No. 5 in Class 7A, beat No. 4 Valdosta 32-21 in a game between 8-0 teams in the state’s most famous rivalry.
The game, held at Lowndes’ Martin Stadium, was the first in 30 years between the crosstown rivals when both had top-five rankings in the highest class. Lowndes (9-0, 4-0) now leads Region 1 and can clinch its first region title since 2021 with a victory over No. 9 Colquitt County (6-3, 3-1) next week.
In Class 3A, No. 2 Appling County beat No. 1 Toombs County 11-7 in another game between 8-0 teams. Toombs entered averaging 58.0 points per game, the most in the state in any class. The victory was Appling County’s first over a No. 1 team since 1967 (Dodge County).

In Class 5A, No. 8 Jefferson beat No. 5 North Oconee 27-17 for the Region 8 championship, ending North Oconee’s five-year reign as a champion.
