A national charity is beginning its Christmas work early in north Fulton County by collecting bicycles for thousands of area children.

Free Bikes 4 Kidz  is sponsoring its "Bike Drop-Off Day" on Oct. 15 throughout metro Atlanta. The Minnesota-based nonprofit — which is launching the bicycle giveaway in metro Atlanta for the first time this year — will have 15 collection stations open where residents can bring bicycles. Two stations will operate in North Fulton that day, one in Sandy Springs and another in Alpharetta.

Last year, the organization gave away 5,000 bicycles to less-fortunate children throughout Minnesota — 25,000 bicycles in the last seven years. Each bike donated locally during the Oct. 15 drive will go to a child in metro Atlanta.

Local volunteers will refurbish each donated bike over the next few months. The campaign ends in time for the Christmas holiday with a “Bike Giveaway Day” on Dec. 3.

Bicycle donations take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents can also sign up here as volunteers for the Oct. 15 bicycle collection event.
