Georgia Gwinnett College will celebrate Gwinnett County’s namesake on April 12.

The college will join the Gwinnett County Public Library in holding Button Gwinnett Day, remembering the Savannah plantation owner who signed the Declaration of Independence. While Gwinnett never lived in the county that bears his name, he remains a major historical figure, even having a statue at the Mall of Georgia.

Button Gwinnett Day will be held on Georgia Gwinnett College's campus in the Cisco Auditorium. From 10 a.m. to noon, the college will host a literary summit with authors Thomas Mullen and Richard Hoard, followed by a panel discussion about writing, journalism and getting published as an author. The panelists will be Will Hammock of the Gwinnett Daily Post; Steven Brown, a business professor at Georgia Gwinnett College; and Bob Babcock, CEO and founder of Deeds Publishing.

The celebration will conclude with the presentation of the GGC Preservation Award to author and publisher Elliott Brack. The award recognizes dedication to preserving Gwinnett County’s history.
