Buckhead Dutch Colonial keeps classic charm through modern update

The brick patio behind Kim and Thomas Rowe's 1930 Dutch Colonial home has two distinct gathering spaces.

Brick stairs lead up to the 1930 Dutch Colonial with 6,695 square feet, three-bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths.

A cloche protects a potted bay leaf plant on the patio table behind Kim and Thomas Rowe's Brookwood home. An outdoor set of sofa and armchairs offers another gathering spot.

The wood Duncan Phyfe-style dining table and a china cabinet are among several pieces inherited from Thomas Rowe's grandparents.

When they bought their 1930 Dutch Colonial home in 2007, Kim and Thomas Rowe renovated the kitchen with the help of contractors Viking Works.

White plates and serveware pop against the breakfast nook's warm gray walls, painted in Farrow and Ball's Purbeck Stone. Pots of fresh rosemary, thyme and bay leaf rest on the console from Baker Furniture. The table, chairs and shade chandelier, all from Ballard Designs, look out onto the Brookwood backyard, where the children's swing set and slide and a patio table and chairs beckon the young family outside. The updated kitchen provides a view of the gardenia bush. "It is such as huge bush," homeowner Kim Rowe said. "You can smell it in the whole backyard."

A neutral couch with geometric pillows rests between a collection of windows and an ottoman coffee table from Wisteria.

In Thomas and Kim Rowe's living room, a piano that belonged to Thomas' great aunt reflects the room's traditional style, complete with a classic bust that Kim fell in love with when she spotted it at a garden center.

Built-in bookshelves line the walls of the sunroom, which the family also calls the den, in the 1930 Dutch Colonial home. The cane chair was found at a garage sale, and the sisal rug is from Myers Carpet.

Young Anna and Libby Rowe's playroom is filled with painted butterflies, creating a lively, spring-like setting for homework and arts and crafts.

In the half bath, homeowner Kim Rowe kept a wall sconce left by the previous owners. "I thought the little bathroom was so cute, and I love that fixture," she said. Text by Marena Galluccio/Fast Copy News Service.

Kim and Thomas Rowe's master bedroom includes a sitting area with a fireplace with black marble and creamy furniture. The chair was originally used in the home's nursery, but was moved when their daughters grew older.

Seven-year-old Libby Rowe's pink bedroom contains bedding from Serena & Lily and a rug from Dash & Albert. The walls are painted Farrow & Ball Middleton Pink.

Thomas Rowe's father handcrafted the cherry wood four-poster bed, which is topped with bedding from Ballard Designs and Serena & Lily. At the foot of the bed is a stool from Peachtree Battle Antiques & Interiors. The dresser belonged to Thomas Rowe's aunt, Anna. Benjamin Moore's Greenbrier Beige coats the walls. Kim and Thomas Rowe, with their daughters, 8-year-old Anna and 7-year-old Libby, bought their 1930 Dutch Colonial home in Brookwood in 2007. Kim is an interior designer, and Thomas is chief financial officer for a commercial real estate developer.
