Atlanta protesters’ enthusiasm endures despite soggy conditions for women’s march

Atlantans appeared to be unshaken by the flooding and rain that hit the metro area in the hours leading into Atlanta’s March on Social Justice and Women, a day after President Donald Trump was inaugurated in Washington D.C.

Organizers of the march announced a 30-minute delay, but due to the dozens already gathered, the delay was shortened by 10 minutes. The Atlanta Police Department estimates that there were around 10,000 just before 2 p.m.

Several protesters headed out on MARTA Saturday morning despite the reports of the delay.

Nearly 16,000 people had committed to marching on the event's Facebook page by Saturday afternoon. The 1.7-mile route commenced at the  Center for Civil and Human Rights on Ivan Allen Jr. Boulevard and concluded at the city's Capitol, where activists spoke on social justice issues, reproductive freedom, health care and the environment.

As the most severe weather subsided, wet and windy conditions remained in Downtown Atlanta.

Metro Atlanta demonstrators were bundled up for the weather, but still riled up for their cause.

Some in attendance used their signs to promote the message of equality and rally behind Rep. John Lewis, who headlined Saturday's women's march after he made headlines last week for a Twitter exchange with President Donald Trump.

Others expressed their protest in the form of jest by poking fun at President Trump.

Many sharing live moments from the march Saturday expressed feelings of empowerment and hope that equality for all would prevail.

By 2 p.m., the march concluded and thousands gathered  to hear Lewis speak.
