A: Who hasn’t found themselves stuck with an opened carton of buttermilk taking up shelf space in the fridge after using just a bit for a recipe? I dribble it over the dogs’ food but, for a lot of people, it simply ends up poured down the drain. So, coming up with buttermilk in powdered form only makes sense. SACO cultured buttermilk blend is made from cream, buttermilk, whey and lactic acid. If your recipe calls for one cup of liquid buttermilk, you can use four tablespoons of SACO and one cup of water. Note that the buttermilk blend isn’t mixed with the water, but added to the dry ingredients, and the water is added with the liquids. The reason SACO seems elusive is because it’s not always hanging out with the baking supplies. You’ll find SACO cultured buttermilk blend for $5.59 on aisle two, sharing space with the powdered and evaporated milk products, at Publix, 1905 Scenic Highway, Snellville, 770-978-5800.
