The new year took a little bit longer to arrive in Plains.
Determined not to be outglitzed by the Atlanta Peach Drop or the Times Square ball, former President Jimmy Carter’s hometown planned on lowering a giant (artificial) peanut off the back of the Plains Historic Inn at the stroke of midnight on Thursday. However, when the big moment came, the lighted legume stalled on the way down.
“We are stuck in 2015!” Jill Stuckey, a member of the city council in the town of some 600 people, joked on New Year’s Day.
Actually, everything was scheduled to be up to date again in Peanut City sometime on Monday. That’s when they planned on bringing the peanut the rest of the way down, said Plains Better Hometown coordinator Ruth Sanders.
