The reviews are in: It was a great Tony Awards. The dancing was inspired, the singing top-notch and the humor sly — and that’s just for the host. Neil Patrick Harris once again proved how crucial he is to the success of one of the lesser-watched televised award shows.
What wasn’t as inspired was Atlanta’s television coverage. WGCL-TV, the network’s local affiliate, ended the awards ceremony seven minutes early Sunday night, causing viewers to miss the winners of three of the main categories.
Anchor Bernard Watson read the winners after the fact but botched the name of the best musical “Kinky Boots,” calling it “Kenny Boots.” Fans flooded CBS Atlanta’s Facebook page with complaints. The network released a statement Monday morning saying it was “human error” and promises “this does not happen again.”
The final segment of the awards was aired Monday at the start of the 4 p.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. broadcasts.
