Sweet sound of music: Traveling internationally, the Fisk Jubilee Singers are noted for singing Negro spirituals. At 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, the two-time Grammy-nominated group will feature Oral Moses, the bass-baritone, while in concert at Cascade United Methodist Church, performing alongside the church's chancel choir. The event is free and open to the public. "These spirituals not only tell the story of hope, faith and belief in God, but some used hidden messages like 'Go Down Moses' that helped guide slaves to freedom," said Paulette Baber, a chancel choir member. Interfaith panel discussion: America has come a long way since the 1960s when a coalition of religious leaders helped bring about fundamental changes in attitudes toward race and social equality. But in recent years, movements in opposition to Stand Your Ground Laws, police actions in Ferguson, Missouri and New York City have once again forced a discussion of prevailing social attitudes. At 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, the Atlanta Interfaith Leaders Fellowship will sponsor a panel discussion called "Social Protest, Social Change & Religion: Exploring Creative Paths to Peace." Held at Emory Presbyterian Church, panelists, including an imam, a community activist, and a reverend, will focus on the role of religion and people of faith in social change and social protest. Free and open to all. For more details, visit www.emorypresbyterian.org. 1886 N. Decatur Road NE, Atlanta.
