Researchers at the Atlanta Botanical Garden are helping rescue endangered amphibians by breeding and raising them in their state-of-the-art FrogPOD laboratory.

The Atlanta Botanical Garden is helping in a world-Marck Mandica holds a Golden Poison Frog of Colombia. They are either bright yellow or white and when laced with its toxins, an arrow can kill for 6 months. These poisonous frogs loose their toxicity when in captivity. While they are kept on a healthy diet, they are unable to consume the Columbia beetles which make them so toxic. Elizabeth Montgomery

Lemur Frogs of Costa Rica are critically extinct. The amphibian conservation program has successfully bred over 400 Lemur frogs and shipped them to accredited institutions to raise awareness of amphibian decline. Lemur frogs are nocturnal tree frogs and sleep under the leaves of plants. Elizabeth Montgomery

Breeding takes place regularly in the conservation program to help produce and preserve endangered amphibian species. Elizabeth Montgomery

The Golden Poison Frog of Colombia in its exhibit habitat at The Atlanta Botanical Garden. Many of the plants in these aquariums contain actual plants from the habitat the frogs were found on during their rescue. Elizabeth Montgomery

Just losing their tadpole tails these baby Lemur Frogs are well on their way to becoming fully grown frogs. The breeding of this species has been extremely successful. Elizabeth Montgomery

This Crowned Tree Frog in its habitat in the FrogPOD. Conservation team is currently working on breeding this species but needs the mother at all times, the only thing her tadpoles will eat are her own eggs. Elizabeth Montgomery

A view from inside the FrogPOD. Public not allowed inside. The highly endangered and fragile species are kept in this portable POD. A light and filtered sprinkler system has been installed giving the frogs the feel of their natural habitat so far away from home. Elizabeth Montgomery

There are five species of Glass Frogs in the conservation program. They received their name "Glass" because they are literally see through in the light.

Mark Mandica holds a Carolina Gopher Frog. These frogs are native to Georgia and every year the conservation holds a Gopher Frog Head Start program. The program breeds these frogs and places them back into the wild to keep the population from declining even more than it already has. Elizabeth Montgomery

A bright green lemur frog peeks out from the greenery in a display case at the Fuqua Conservatory at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. The frogs are raised at the garden's Frog Pod as part of a worldwide effort to save species from extinction. Christopher Quinn

Glass frogs, such as this one hunkering down on a leaf, can be seen at the Atlanta Botanical Garden's frog exhibit. More than a third of all known amphibians are threatened with extinction, and the garden participates in breeding frogs in conservation collections as an important tool for preserving them.
