We lost some pioneering rock legends, some more recent greats and a few of country's best.

Troy Gentry of Montgomery Gentry died in a helicopter crash in Medford, New Jersey , Sept. 8.

Greg Trooper was a brilliant songwriter whose tunes were covered by Steve Earle, Vince Gill and Billy Bragg. He died Jan. 15, 2017, at age 61.

James Cotton (right) performs with Jimmie Vaughan at the Austin Music Awards show at the Austin Music Hall in March 2001. The blues harmonica great - who played with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and many others - died March 16, 2017, in Austin, Texas, at age 81.

Louisiana-born Chicago bluesman and guitar great Lonnie Brooks died April 1, 2017, at the age of 83.

Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington, who sold millions of albums with a unique mix of rock, hip-hop and rap, died in his home near Los Angeles at 41. Coroner spokesman Brian Elias says they are investigating Bennington's death as an apparent suicide but no additional details are available.

Rapper Albert Johnson, best known by his stage name Prodigy and as one-half of highly acclaimed rap duo Mobb Deep, died Tuesday, June 20, 2017. He was 42 years old.
