Many of the works at this year's Folk Fest tell a story. Here are some of the pieces you can see at the annual event.

Billy Roper, whose favorite author is Mark Twain, comes from a long line of Georgia storytellers. Dealer Stan "Potteryman" Clark is presenting a rising Southern visual storyteller at Folk Fest, Georgia artist Richard E. Roebuck, who created this untitled painting. The event is Aug. 16-18 at North Atlanta Trade Center.

"The Pastor's House," a painting by Dorethey Gorham. Main Street Gallery is showing works by the Georgia folk artist at Folk Fest (Aug. 16-18 at North Atlanta Trade Center) as well as in the one-woman exhibit "An Angel's Lift; a Devil's Pull" through Sept. 3 at its gallery in Clayton.

"My Grandma Old Quilt," a painting by Missionary Mary Proctor. Main Street Gallery of Clayton will show works such as this one by the Florida folk artist at Folk Fest (Aug. 16-18 at North Atlanta Trade Center), and Proctor will have a booth of her own there as well.

Athens folk artist Steven Chandler, who paints under the name Georgia Red Mud, turned the story of the 2011 suicide of Watkinsville barbecue restaurant owner Howard "Hot" Thomas, into a depiction of the blues. Chandler, who sells most of his paintings on eBay, will be represented at Folk Fest by Around Back at Rocky's Place.

Texas folk artist Julie Schronk packs her colorful canvases with tiny figures inhabiting a larger landscape that is filled with details of daily life, including in this untitled painting of children at a birthday party.

Alabama folk artist James Buddy Snipes' works are simple yet evocative, as are his titles, such as the one for this work: "Crazy People Fussing at Each Other's Dogs." Snipes' rustic paintings will be for sale by Main Street Gallery and in other gallery and dealer booths during Folk Fest, Aug. 16-18 at North Atlanta Trade Center.
