This colorful military style hat is similar to one worn by some of the characters in Dr. Seuss's popular 1984 book, "The Butter Battle Book." It's included in the national touring exhibition "Hats Off to Dr. Seuss!" at the Ann Jackson Gallery in Roswell from Jan. 31-Feb. 16.

Four months after publication of The Cat in the Hat made him a children's book superstar in 1957, Geisel was featured in the Saturday Evening Post, along with this self-portrait. Entitled "The Cat Behind the Hat," he portrayed himself as this mischievous character's alter ego, right down to the striped hat and the bow ties both favored.

"The Cat That Changed the World" is part of the Estate-authorized art exhibition featured alongside the hat display at "Hats Off to Dr. Seuss!" at the Ann Jackson Gallery in Roswell. It's adapted from the circa 1957 original preproduction drawing for the book, "The Cat in the Hat," that made Theodor Seuss Geisel famous far beyond the world of young readers of his books.

This Robin Hood-style cap is similar to the one sported by the title character in Dr. Seuss's second book, "The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins." It's included in the national touring exhibition "Hats Off to Dr. Seuss!" at the Ann Jackson Gallery in Roswell from Jan. 31-Feb. 16.

Many of the characters in Dr. Seuss's books wore colorful headgear, but none so memorably as The Cat in the Hat. There's no specific documentation on when Theodor Seuss Geisel acquired this doppelganger version of the cat's signature stovepipe hat. It's thought a friend may have had it made for him after the 1957 book made him an authorial superstar. Theodor Seiss Geisel started out as a commercial artist and even after he found fame and success writing and illustrating nearly 50 "Dr. Seuss" books, he painted and created sculptures that the outside world knew little about. Some 50 estate authorized reproductions of pieces done by Geisel, shown here at his easel, are featured in the so-called "Secret Art" portion of the traveling exhibtion, "Hats Off to Dr. Seuss!" The show is currently at the Ann Jackson Gallery in Roswell, its only stop in Georgia.
