We all want our canine companions to stick around forever, and according to Alexandra Horowitz, author of "Being a Dog: Following the Dog into a World of Smell," taking care of your dog's dental health can help prolong your furry pal's life.

A 1996 study published in the "Journal of Veterinary Dentistry" recommends daily tooth-brushing, but you can also opt for professional dental cleaning under an anesthetic or keep dental chews nearby.
