Popular hypoallergenic dogs

PORTUGUESE WATER DOGS were on display at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in February, but the breed really won big when the Obamas picked it as their first pup for its hypoallergenic qualities.

Although the American Kennel Club cautions that there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog, some "low dander" breeds are popularly mentioned as being good for allergy sufferers. A dog is considered low-dander due to its light shedding, short hair or having a single coat. Here are some popular choices. WEST HIGHLAND TERRIER: A very popular breed with a short-haired double coat.

MALTESE: The American Kennel Club released a list of recommended breeds for allergy sufferers, but it was a short list. Malteses, with their single coat, made the list.

SCHNAUZER: Famous for not shedding, schnauzers also made the AKC's short list.

POODLE MIXES: The coats of labradoodles and goldendoodles (shown) are also tight and curly enough to make these trendy mixes low-dander.

CAIRN TERRIER: Double coated with a wiry outercoat, Cairns still do not shed much.

BICHON FRISE: The Bichon Frise is on the AKC's short list, but that fluffy coat needs attention.

YORKSHIRE TERRIER: Yorkies have a shiny coat that doesn't shed very much, but which does require regular grooming.

BASENJI: This breed has short fine hair, and tends to wash itself like a cat, which lessens shedding.

SOFT-COATED WHEATEN TERRIER: Another breed on the AKC's short list, Wheatens don't shed that shaggy coat very much.

PERUVIAN HAIRLESS: Truly a non-shedding dog, this breed has no hair to shed in the first place. The national dog of Peru, one owner in that country has already offered her puppy to the Obama family as a gift.

SHIH-TZU: Despite having a thick double coat, the shih-tzu doesn't shed much. But that thick coat does require regular grooming.
