Not much is known about the conditions in which Elvis was raised, though the charity became aware of his situation about 5 years ago, when Elvis weighed 31 pounds. The charity began taking care of him in January.

Elvis is now on a strict, no-carb diet, with each meal weighed. The diet is agreeing with him, and he has lost two pounds.

His foster mom says Elvis is a big sweetheart, who enjoys receiving attention from people, including hugs.

Guinness World Records does not keep track of the world’s heaviest pets. That hasn’t stopped social media from labeling Elvis as a “world’s fattest cat” contender.

The animal charity stresses that being overweight is bad for any pet.
