A dog chasing a squirrel triggered an emergency rescue from an icy pond in Massachusetts.
Maya, a 1-year-old mixed breed, ran onto the ice Thursday morning after she saw a squirrel and promptly fell through into the frigid water below.

The dog managed to not go completely underwater by using her front paws to support herself on the ice. She even tried to use a tree branch to pull herself out.

Maya’s owner, Mike Martorana, wisely waited on firefighters trained in ice rescue to respond, instead of trying to go out on the ice himself.
Martorana told The Lowell Sun that the rescue crew was there within five minutes, and the fire captain donned an exposure suit to pull Maya safely out of the icy water.
Maya is back at home, recovering from her ordeal.
