The pair adopted a shelter cat and paid $15,000 to have a kidney transplanted from Joey, the donor cat, into Arthur, their sick cat. The surgery took place in 2014 at the University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching Hospital, according to Phys.org.

In a recent interview,  the couple said that Arthur and Joey are both doing well and have developed a very close bond.
