Here's a way to honor military veterans during the Memorial Day holiday.

Military cemeteries in Canton and Marietta will have free events on May 28 and May 30.

Formerly known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day honors U.S. service members who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union and Confederate soldiers following the Civil War, it was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars.

Col. Carol Mellom, retired member of the U.S. Air Force Reserve, will be the keynote speaker at 10 a.m. May 28 at Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Scott Hudgens Drive in Canton.

Then, at noon on May 30, Major General Edison E. Scholes, retired, U.S. Army, will speak at the rostrum at Marietta National Cemetery, 500 Washington Ave. in Marietta.

Parking is limited in Canton and there is no vehicle parking in Marietta.

Attendees may want to bring folding chairs, hats and water.
