Before she was a special assistant to the President of the United States, advising him on everything from climate change to bombing Syria, before she was married to Jared Kushner and had three children, a then-single, 24-year-old Ivanka Trump talked to The Palm Beach Post about her childhood memories of Mar-A-Lago and what she liked to do in Palm Beach.
Some excerpts:
Favorite watering holes: "Over the years I've sort of changed in that regard. I'm much more inclined to have friends over to Mar-a-Lago or go to a friend's home… . I go out a lot less and enjoy smaller groups and dinner parties a lot more."
Feeding grounds: "Mar-a-Lago has an incredible meatloaf, so that's probably one of my favorite dishes. I couldn't believe it when I saw it on the menu, I was just shocked. And now it's pretty much all I order. Green's Pharmacy used to have great burgers there. And I like Echo very much." For a date, however, "I guess then I would probably leave Mar-a-Lago…Chez Jean-Pierre I think is very good for romantic-type dates."
Hanging with her flock: "I take a lot of walks on the beach. It's so long and it's so beautiful. And it's a way to kill two birds with one stone, get some exercise while simultaneously catching up with friends… . My preference is the six to 10 person gathering of friends."
Her Palm Beach routine: "Palm Beach offers everything for everybody. I tend to wake up, play golf, have lunch poolside, then tennis … it's almost hedonistic … just in terms of indulgence I can't imagine a better place to spend some time off."
Palm Beach memories: "When I was around 6 in what is now the small ballroom (at Mar-a-Lago) there used to be the screening room … it was right when Madonna's Immaculate Collection came out, so I put on little performances in there (for whoever would watch)."
Has Palm Beach changed? "I think some things are consistent. I grew up with most of the people that are still going there. While things change, it's sort of the same group of people … we can always rely on seeing each other over Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. But it's not stagnant; it's always evolving, becoming more fun and better."
