Outdoor spaces, such as decks, patios and porches, can add value to a home. But they take some planning, too. This outdoor seating area was created off the family room of a Buckhead home by interior designer Cathy Rhodes and Kolo Collection. The Brown Jordan sectional is complemented by custom tables made by Atlanta artisans.

Outdoor lighting is also a consideration. These vintage string lights are similar to the romantic lights you see illuminating the outdoor cafes of Europe. By the pool, this Buckhead home features a wood table from Jensen Leisure Furniture's Ipe Collection, which is teamed with bench seating. The Parkway chaises and the woven occasional tables are from Brown Jordan.

Canadian-based Urban Fire makes stainless steel outdoor fire pits for residential and commercial use. The sleek fire pit, 36 inches wide by 16.5 inches high, provides a dramatic focal point to your deck or patio. It is $1,599 at AuthenTeak in Atlanta.

Make sure furnishings complement the exterior of the house as well as the outside trim, stucco or brick colors. This Chelsea set features lounge chairs and a 55-inch round coffee table.

The Viking Outdoor 5000 series of gas grills are new this summer. The grills are available in three sizes: 30-inch wide, 42-inch wide and 54-inch wide (pictured). They can be installed into a grill cart or built in to custom outdoor cabinetry. An illuminated control panel provides lighting when grilling at night.
