Kent and Michelle Jones longed for a home with outdoor space for entertaining and organic gardening, without having to mow a yard. The couple, who lived in a 3,500-square-foot home with three levels in east Cobb County, also wanted to shorten their drive to downtown Atlanta.

“We wanted to be closer to town,” said Kent, managing director at MarketPlan Product Marketing. “The suburbs were fun when we were raising kids, but it’s nice to be close to shows and food.”

Michelle, vice president of business development at Stonebranch, said they were attracted to the minimal yard work of a townhouse, but were also open to looking at traditional homes. If a home had more than one story, one must was an elevator.

Their agent, Mike Toltzis with Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty, showed them these three homes in Fulton County.

NO. 1: TIMELESS TWO STORY

A five-bedroom, three-bath home on Rock Springs Road in Atlanta’s Morningside neighborhood caught their attention because of the openness in the kitchen, living room and office area on the first floor. The yard work necessary to keep up the landscaping was more than they were seeking. The house was move-in ready with updated kitchen appliances and had a deck. The Fulton County home, built in 1930, was listed for $847,500.

NO. 2: TOWNHOME WITH ELEVATOR

A four-bedroom, four-bath townhome on Buckhead Forest Mews in Atlanta was appealing because it was a detached unit with windows on four sides. The home had an elevator and outdoor living space, such as terraces, on all three levels. The bathrooms needed minor updates. The townhouse was located in an active Buckhead neighborhood. The Fulton County home, built in 2003, was listed for $750,000.

NO. 3: ROOFTOP WITH A VIEW

A three-bedroom, three-and-a-half bath townhome on Habersham Road in Buckhead offered a view of Midtown and the Buckhead skyline from the fourth floor. The home had an elevator, rooftop deck and terraces on every level. A slight drawback was the lack of storage space. The Fulton County home, built in 2010, was listed for $835,000.

THE CHOICE: NO. 3

The Buckhead townhome had a brownstone-style exterior that reminded Kent of his childhood home in Manhattan. The abundance of light and the colors the previous owners had painted the walls gave the townhome a warm feel, Michelle said. They enjoy container gardening on their 16-by-20-foot rooftop deck and terraces. Their cat, Samson, also has adjusted to the townhome, said Michelle. “He’s really getting a workout going up and down the stairs,” said Kent.
