Lanterns are a unique way to highlight your outdoor living space. With an option to light a candle or use battery-operated lights, outdoor lanterns offer small dose of light for a fresh ambiance.

There are several ways lanterns can be used outdoors. Meredith Mahoney, founder and design director of Birch Lane, an online home furnishings and decor retailer, suggests placing lanterns in your entryway and in your backyard. You can also greet your guests by lining your walkway with lanterns.

You can group lanterns together or place them individually, according to Mahoney. These six chic lanterns can be found through various retailers online or in stores.

1. The vintage-style Hyannis Lantern from Pottery Barn is made from blown glass with room for a candle to light up a patio or garden. The lantern can be carried using the rope handle attached to the stainless steel frame. It comes in small, medium and large sizes ($24.50-$69, potterybarn.com).

2. Made of handcrafted wood and painted white, the Bay Harbor Lantern from Pier 1 Imports has a modern, coastal look. A small door attached by a stainless steel latch opens to a space for a tealight candle, which mimics a lighthouse when lit. It is rust-resistant ($29.95, pier1.com).

3. The cylinder shape and rustic fir wood frame give the Hollingsworth Lantern from Birch Lane a rustic touch. Held together by glass and metal accents, the lantern can be hung from the ceiling from a chain or placed on a tabletop. The lantern holds one pillar candle ($119, birchlane.com).

4. Home Design Studio's Starry Lights Mason Jar from Macy's gives outdoor tables and living areas a warm glow. When turned on, a string of 10 LED illuminate the glass jar. The lantern, powered by AAA batteries (not included) can be sealed with the copper lid. It has a copper handle ($25, macys.com).

5. The wicker latticework gives a crafted look to the Ormond Lantern from Birch Lane. The ceramic material has a weathered finish that gives an outdoor space an artistic, beachy style. The lantern comes in small and large sizes ($39, birchlane.com).

6. The Home Design Studio Wood Candle Lantern from Macy's adds modern flare. Glass panels are held together by a dark wood frame giving it a rectangular structure. An iron handle drapes over the back of the lantern. Choose from medium and oversized, which is 10.25 inches by eight inches by 18 inches ($40-$95, macys.com).
